Ginger Water.

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 15 minutes

Cooling Time: 20 minutes (optional)

Total Time: 45 minutes

Servings: 4

Difficulty Level: Easy

Ingredients

  • 2 inches fresh ginger root
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon honey (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice (optional)
  • Ice cubes (optional)
  • Fresh mint leaves for garnish (optional)
  • Lemon slices for serving (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Wash the Ginger

Wash the fresh ginger thoroughly under running water. Since ginger grows underground, it is important to remove any dirt or debris. You may peel the ginger if desired, but leaving the skin on is perfectly fine if it has been cleaned well.

Step 2: Slice the Ginger

Cut the ginger into thin slices. Thin slices help release more flavor into the water during cooking.

Step 3: Boil the Water

Pour four cups of water into a medium saucepan. Bring the water to a rolling boil over medium-high heat.

Step 4: Add the Ginger

Once the water begins boiling, carefully add the sliced ginger.

Step 5: Simmer

Reduce the heat to low and allow the ginger to simmer gently for 15 minutes. A longer simmer will produce a stronger, spicier flavor.

Step 6: Remove from Heat

Turn off the heat and allow the ginger water to cool slightly.

Step 7: Strain

Pour the liquid through a fine mesh strainer into a pitcher or large jar, removing the ginger slices.

Step 8: Add Flavor (Optional)

If desired, stir in honey while the water is still warm. Add fresh lemon juice for a bright citrus flavor.

Step 9: Chill or Serve Warm

Serve immediately as a warm drink or refrigerate until cold. Pour over ice if serving chilled.

Step 10: Garnish

Garnish each glass with fresh mint leaves and lemon slices before serving.

Recipe Tips

  • Use fresh ginger for the best flavor.

  • Add cinnamon sticks during simmering for extra warmth.
  • Cucumber slices make a refreshing summer variation.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to three days.
  • Shake or stir before serving if natural particles settle.

  • Mix with sparkling water before serving.
  • Add turmeric for a deeper golden color.

  • Sweeten with maple syrup instead of honey.
  • Add lime juice instead of lemon.
