Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 3½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 cup warm milk (110°F/43°C)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg

For the Garlic Butter

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Instructions

Step 1: Activate the Yeast

In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let the mixture rest for 5–10 minutes until it becomes foamy.

Step 2: Prepare the Dough

Add the melted butter, egg, and salt to the yeast mixture. Gradually mix in the flour until a soft dough forms.

Step 3: Knead

Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. If using a stand mixer, knead with the dough hook for about 6 minutes.

Step 4: First Rise

Place the dough into a lightly greased bowl. Cover with a clean towel or plastic wrap and allow it to rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Step 5: Shape the Rolls

Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal portions. Shape each portion into a smooth ball.

Step 6: Arrange in Skillet

Grease a 10-inch cast iron skillet with butter. Arrange the dough balls evenly inside the skillet, leaving a little space between each one.

Step 7: Second Rise

Cover the skillet and allow the rolls to rise for 30 minutes until they become puffy.

Step 8: Bake

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 22–25 minutes or until the tops are golden brown.

Step 9: Make the Garlic Butter

While the rolls bake, combine the melted butter, minced garlic, parsley, garlic powder, and salt in a small bowl.

Step 10: Finish and Serve

Brush the warm rolls generously with the garlic butter immediately after removing them from the oven. Allow them to cool for 5 minutes before serving.

Recipe Tips

  • Use fresh garlic for the best flavor.
  • Make sure the milk is warm, not hot, to avoid killing the yeast.
  • Do not over-flour the dough; a slightly sticky dough produces softer rolls.
  • Brush with a second layer of garlic butter just before serving for extra richness.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
