Servings

Serves: 4–6 people

Ingredients

  • 2 large yellow onions
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or milk mixed with 1 tablespoon lemon juice)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup corn flour or cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for spice)
  • 1–2 tablespoons cooking oil spray or olive oil

Equipment Needed

  • Air fryer
  • Sharp knife or mandoline slicer
  • Mixing bowls
  • Tongs
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Onions

Peel the onions and slice them into very thin rings. For the crispiest results, aim for slices about 1/8 inch thick. Separate the rings gently with your fingers.

Place the onion slices in a bowl and pour the buttermilk over them. Make sure all onion pieces are coated. Let them soak for about 20 minutes. This step softens the onions slightly and helps the coating stick better while adding a mild, rich flavor.

Step 2: Prepare the Crispy Coating

In a separate bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, corn flour or cornstarch, salt, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and cayenne pepper if using.

Mix the seasoning well so the flavors are evenly distributed throughout the coating.

Step 3: Coat the Onion Strings

Remove a handful of soaked onions from the buttermilk and allow excess liquid to drip off. Add them to the flour mixture and toss until every onion strand is lightly covered.

For extra crunch, you can repeat the process by dipping the coated onions back into the buttermilk and then into the flour mixture again. A double coating creates a thicker, crispier texture.

Step 4: Preheat the Air Fryer

Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for 3–5 minutes.

Preheating helps the onions begin crisping immediately and creates a more even golden finish.

Step 5: Air Fry the Onion Strings

Lightly spray the air fryer basket with oil. Place the coated onion strings in a single layer. Avoid overcrowding the basket because too many onions at once can trap moisture and prevent crisping.

Lightly spray the onions with oil.

Air fry at 375°F (190°C) for 6–8 minutes. Open the basket, shake gently, and separate any pieces that are sticking together.

Continue cooking for another 6–7 minutes until the onion strings are golden brown and crispy.

Cooking times may vary depending on the air fryer model and the thickness of your onion slices.

Step 6: Serve and Enjoy

Remove the crispy onion strings from the air fryer and let them cool for 2–3 minutes. They will become even crispier as they cool.

Serve immediately as a snack with your favorite dipping sauce, or use them as a topping for burgers, sandwiches, mashed potatoes, casseroles, and salads.

Tips for Perfect Crispy Onion Strings

  • Slice onions evenly so they cook at the same rate.
  • Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket.
  • Shake the basket halfway through cooking for even browning.
  • Corn flour or cornstarch helps create a lighter and crunchier coating.
  • For extra flavor, add dried herbs such as oregano, thyme, or Italian seasoning.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container and reheat in the air fryer for a few minutes to restore crispiness.

Flavor Variations

Spicy Onion Strings

Add extra cayenne pepper, chili powder, or smoked paprika to the coating for a spicy version.

Cheesy Onion Strings

Mix a few tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese into the flour coating for a savory, cheesy flavor.

Herb-Flavored Onion Strings

Add dried parsley, rosemary, or Italian herbs for a fresh, aromatic taste.

Storage Instructions

Air Fryer Crispy Onion Strings are best enjoyed fresh, but leftovers can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.

To reheat, place them back in the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 3–5 minutes until crispy again. Avoid reheating them in the microwave because they may become soft.
