Air Fryer Poached Eggs served on toast.

  • Prep Time: 3 minutes

  • Cook Time: 5 to 7 minutes

  • Total Time: 8 to 10 minutes

  • Intensity Level: Easy (Beginner-friendly)

  • Yield: 2 servings (2 poached eggs on 2 slices of toast)

Ingredients

For the Eggs & Toast

  • 2 large eggs (fresh, cold eggs work best)

  • 2 slices sourdough or artisan whole-wheat bread

  • 4 tbsp hot water (2 tbsp per ramekin)

  • 1 tsp extra virgin olive oil or non-stick oil spray (for coating ramekins)

  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter or avocado oil (for spreading on toast)

Optional Garnish & Toppings

  • Flaky sea salt (such as Maldon) and freshly ground black pepper

  • 1 tbsp fresh chives or dill, finely chopped

  • Pinch of red pepper flakes or a drizzle of chili crisp

Essential Kitchen Equipment

  • Air Fryer (basket or oven style)

  • 2 oven-safe ceramic ramekins (4-inch diameter or small silicon egg poaching cups)

  • Tongs or silicone oven mitts (for safely removing hot ramekins)

  • Slotted spoon

Step-by-Step Instructions

1.Preheat the air fryer:3 minutes.

Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (175°C) for 3 minutes. Preheating ensures an accurate ambient cooking temperature the moment the eggs enter the basket, leading to reliable yolk consistency.

2.Prepare the ramekins:1 minute.

Lightly coat the inside of two small ramekins with olive oil spray. Pour 2 tablespoons of hot water into each ramekin. The water creates steam inside the dish, mimicking traditional water-poaching.

3.Crack the eggs:1 minute.

Gently crack 1 egg into each ramekin containing the warm water. Take care not to puncture the yolk.

4.Air fry to desired doneness:5-7 minutes.

Place the ramekins carefully into the air fryer basket. Cook at 350°F (175°C):

  • Runny yolk: 5 to 6 minutes

  • Jammy yolk: 6 to 7 minutes

  • Firm yolk: 8 minutes

(Note: Wattages vary across air fryer models, so check consistency at the 5-minute mark on your first attempt).

5.Toast and assemble:2 minutes.

While the eggs cook, toast your sourdough slices to a deep golden brown and spread with butter. Once the eggs finish cooking, use tongs to remove the hot ramekins. Use a slotted spoon to lift each egg out of the water, drain briefly, and lay directly atop the hot buttered toast. Season with flaky salt, black pepper, and fresh chives.

Expert Tips for Success

Water Temperature Matters: Always start with hot tap water in the ramekin. Cold water takes too long to heat up, resulting in overcooked yolks before the whites have a chance to set completely.

  • Use Fresh Eggs: Fresh egg whites are significantly thicker and hold together much better during the steaming process, preventing the white from separating into thin, watery layers.

  • Avoid Crowding: Ensure there is space between the ramekins in your air fryer basket so heat can circulate evenly around both containers.

Chef’s Variations

  • Avocado & Chili Crunch Toast: Mash 1/2 a ripe avocado onto your toast with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice before topping with the poached egg and spooning chili oil over the top.

  • Garlic Herb & Parmesan Toast: Rub a raw garlic clove over hot toasted rustic bread, top with fresh baby spinach, the air-fried poached egg, and a sprinkle of micro-planed Parmesan cheese.
