Ingredients

  • 2 large sweet onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • ½ cup apple cider vinegar
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • ½ teaspoon celery seeds
  • ½ teaspoon ground turmeric
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

Step 1

Peel the onions and slice them into thin, even rings. Place the sliced onions into a clean, heatproof glass jar or container.

Step 2

In a medium saucepan, combine the white vinegar, apple cider vinegar, sugar, salt, mustard seeds, celery seeds, turmeric, black pepper, and red pepper flakes if using.

Step 3

Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat while stirring until the sugar and salt have completely dissolved.

Step 4

Remove the saucepan from the heat and carefully pour the hot brine over the sliced onions. Ensure every onion slice is submerged in the liquid.

Step 5

Allow the onions to cool to room temperature for about one hour.

Step 6

Seal the jar with a lid and refrigerate for at least 24 hours before serving. The flavor becomes even better after two to three days.

Recipe Tips

  • Sweet onions provide the best flavor, but yellow or red onions also work well.
  • For extra crunch, avoid overcooking the brine.
  • Add garlic cloves or fresh dill for additional flavor.
  • Store the onions in the refrigerator for up to three weeks.
  • Always use a clean utensil when serving to keep the onions fresh.

Serving Suggestions

Bread & Butter Onions are incredibly versatile. Serve them on hamburgers, pulled pork sandwiches, grilled chicken, tacos, wraps, sausages, barbecue platters, salads, rice bowls, or alongside roasted vegetables. They also pair beautifully with cheddar cheese, crackers, and charcuterie boards.

Storage

Store the onions in an airtight glass jar in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks. Do not store them at room temperature. The flavor continues to develop during refrigeration, making them even tastier after a few days.
